Egypt says concrete work completed on Africa's tallest tower

CAIRO, 19 hours, 40 minutes ago

Egypt has announced the completion of the concrete work at the 400-m Iconic Tower located in the New Administrative Capital (NAC), east of Cairo, according to a report.

Said to be the tallest tower in Africa, the 80-floor project covers an area of 65,000 sq m, reported Arab News.

The task of constructing this tower was assigned by NUCA to the China State Construction Engineering Company (CSCEC), which will operate under the design and supervision of Dar Al Handasah.

Work was carried out in three phases, stated the report citing a Dar Al Handasah official.

'The construction took 800 non-stop working days and the pandemic did not halt the work,' said Ahmed Al Banna, the project manager.

'The second phase, from the third floor to the 30th floor, took about 100 workdays, while during the third phase, one floor took about six workdays. The number of engineers, technicians and workers in the group amounted to 190,' he explained.

The project, being jointly implemented by the Egyptian Ministry of Housing, represented by the New Urban Communities Authority, and CSCEC is estimated to cost nearly $3 billion.

Lauding the achievement, Minister of Housing Assem Al Gazzar said: 'This represents a historic day in the history of modern Egypt and serves as a documentation of the growth the country is witnessing.'

'The Iconic Tower project will serve as a turning point in the history of urbanisation in Egypt ,' he stated at a function organised to celebrate the milestone.

'Next week, we are launching another new project in the city of El Alamein alongside several new towers,' he added.
