ECA files lawsuits against mobile operator, retailers for cooperation failure

The ECA said, ''Those cooperating with the ECA should provide the necessary data and information in a timely manner to ensure the speedy completion of studies at the Authority. Any party that violates this rule shall be subject to legal accountability and a fine up to EGP 500,000.''

The Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA) has filed a lawsuit against one of the telecommunications companies operating in Egypt and two retailers for their failure to provide the data and documents required for an electronic device market study by the ECA, in violation of the law.

The ECA said, “Those cooperating with the ECA should provide the necessary data and information in a timely manner to ensure the speedy completion of studies at the Authority. Any party that violates this rule shall be subject to legal accountability and a fine up to EGP 500,000.”

Chairperson of the ECA, Mahmoud Mumtaz, held a board meeting during which several decisions were taken related to the telecommunication, pharmaceutical, food industry, real estate, electronic devices, and medical sectors.

The ECA board agreed to reconcile with two hotel establishments that submitted requests for conciliation after they had refused to provide the required data for the aforementioned study.

The Authority stressed its keenness to monitor and study different sectors in the Egyptian market, examine potential cases that violate healthy competition, and prevent monopolistic practices, all to ensure enhancing the efficiency of the national economy and improving the economic environment.
