Telecom Egypt extends reach through SEA-ME-WE 6 cable

ArabFinance: Telecom Egypt (ETEL) announced that it extended the reach through the Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 6 subsea cable, SEA-ME-WE 6, as a part of the consortium participating in the cable, according to a statement field to the Egyptian Exchange (EGX) on Tuesday.

SEA-ME-WE 6 will cross Egypt over Telecom Egypt’s infrastructure through new diversified crossings and landing points from other SEA-ME-WE cables.

The new cable boost diversity and resilience of the high traffic density route between Asia and Europe.

It helps improve the consortium’s capacity, minimize traffic faults, and reduce network ownership costs.

Slated for completion by the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, the SEA-ME-WE 6 system has “more fiber pairs and over double the capacities of existing SEA-ME-WE cables over its overall path.”

The SEA-ME-WE 6 cable will offer low latency connection between Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Western Europe, with a capacity to transfer over 100 terabytes per second, which is equivalent to transferring 40,000 high-definition videos every second.

'We are also pleased to provide the new cable that serves as the shortest and most reliable link between Asia, Africa, and Europe as it connects the Red and Mediterranean Seas,” Telecom Egypt’s CEO and Managing Director Adel Hamed said.

It is noteworthy that the SEA-ME-WE 6 consortium includes several companies from Africa and Asia, including Telecom Egypt, Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company, India’s Bharti Airtel Ltd, Maldives’ Dhiraagu, Djibouti Telecom, Saudi Arabia’s Mobily, France’s Orange, and Pakistan’s Trans World Associates.
